“Erling’s First Scuba Dive” is a Bouvet Media documentary on the first dive of then 14 year old Erling Rolandsen, in Komodo National Park, Indonesia.
Erling is my oldest son, and he had his first scuba dive during our vacation to Labuan Bajo (Flores), known as one of the better dive sites in the world. His Dive Instructor was Jules Vanmaele of “Manta Rhei Dive Experience”, a dive centre operated by a Belgian family, and highly recommended. Our sincere thanks to Jules, who with friendliness and calm competence made this a great experience!
The dives were done in the Komodo National Park (off the west coast of Flores), one of the “new 7 nature wonders of the world”, with Komodo, Rinca, Padar and 26 other small islands. Known as the home to the Komodo Dragon, the park also includes a diverse marine environment with more than 1000 species of fish, including the majestic Manta Rey (which we’ll see in the film), sea turtles, and about 260 species of reef-building coral. Perfect place for a first dive, isn’t it?
For the record: This isn’t a professional production, I’m not an experienced diver, and my sole equipment a small, simple, borrowed camera. It was real fun doing, though!
